 Hurricane and Flood Action Checklist

___Shut down processes safely and drain open tanks of flammable or combustible liquids. Clean out drains and catch basins.

___ Inspect roof edging strips, gutters, flashing, covering, and drains. Inspect sign and stack supports, guy wires, and anchorages. Brace unsupported structural members at construction sites.

___ Check for weak latches or hardware and insecure panel fastenings on doors and windows. Expedite repairs. Protect vulnerable windows from flying debris.

___ Protect important records from wind, debris, and rain. Up- date important backup records (physical and computer). Move them to a location not vulnerable to the same incident.

___ Make sure above- and below-ground tanks are properly anchored to prevent flotation. Fill empty tanks with water or product, and extend vent lines on active tanks above the anticipated maximum water level.

___ Anchor structures in the yard that can be moved by high winds or flood waters, such as trailers, lumber, or any loose yard storage. Move stored materials inside if practical. Move important machinery, stock, and reports to higher elevations.

___ Assemble the following supplies and equipment at a central, secure location:

_  Emergency lighting       _  Caulking compound           _  Roofing paper
_  Lumber and nails          _  Portable pumps/hose         _  Chain saws
_  Tape for windows         _  Mops and squeegees        _  Sandbags
_  Shovels and axes           _  Power & manual tools       _  Tarpaulins

___ Ensure that the emergency crew remaining on the premises has the following:

_  Nonperishable food    _  Stored drinking water      _  Radio receivers
_  First aid equipment     _  Portable generators         _  Lighting

___ Fill emergency generator and fire pump fuel tanks. Inspect all fire protection equipment to be sure it is in service.

___ Take extraordinary measures to secure outdoor traveling cranes and bridges. Besides setting rail clamps, secure by wedges and cable anchors. Check travel brakes. Anchor them in accordance with the manufacturer's out-of-service instructions.

___ Place sandbags at vulnerable openings. Divert water from critical areas such as holes in foundations, doorways, and sills.

___ Shut off all flammable and combustible liquids lines at their source to prevent the discharge of such liquids from piping broken by floating debris. Support exposed piping properly. Lash down portable containers of flammable or combustible liquids.

___ Shut off electrical power at the main building. Disconnect when that building is in imminent danger of flooding.
